7 New Flats in High Wycombe

Amid the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, a multi-unit residential building consisting of seven flats was presented to Vector Structures with the intention of having a full structural design undertaking spanning over RIBA stages 3-5. The prevailing scarcity of construction materials during this period necessitated a close collaboration between our team and the main contractor to devise innovative solutions that could circumvent the supply chain limitations. In response to material shortages, a strategic use of lightweight masonry became integral to the support structure.

Additionally, the incorporation of stiffened timber elements into the design was a thoughtful measure aimed at mimicking the structural properties of steel beams, serving as a practical alternative in the face of long steel lead times. To further optimize the construction process, shallow reinforced strip foundations were used and stepped where required to ensure that the building sat on competent strata without incurring excessive costs associated with deep foundations. In line with our commitment to mindful construction, steel beams were selectively used only where absolutely necessary.

Our pragmatic approach underscored a dedication to sustainability, showcasing our ability to navigate the distinct challenges presented by the pandemic with resourcefulness and adaptability.
